FREEZE YOUR ENERGY CONSUMPTION

How to reduce your kitchen's energy consumption

We are all becoming acutely aware of the way we use energy in our homes. When designing a new kitchen one thing that may now be front of mind is controlling household costs in the coming years.

Your fridge and freezer work hard 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and 365 days a year to keep your food at an optimum temperature. Unlike some appliances, your fridge and freezer are an absolute necessity. That is why it's important to consider how much energy they consume when keeping your food at it's optimum temperature.

Energy efficiency classes in the UK have recently changed to fall in line with the rest of the Europe. You can find more information about the changes here. Fridges and freezers tend to fall into the lower half of the categories, with many between D-F rated.

How to freeze your energy consumption

According to the Energy Saving Trust (Guide to choosing home appliances - Energy Saving Trust), cooling appliances account for 13% of our energy bills. Fridges and freezers can have a lifespan of up to 17 years, so investing in an energy-efficient model could see you saving more money in the long term.

Choosing a higher-rated appliance can save you money. For instance, the Energy Saving Trust advises that 'choosing a D-rated fridge freezer over an F-rated unit will save you about £570 in energy bills over the lifetime of the product'.

It is also worth noting that smaller appliances can consume less energy than those in the same energy band. A more accurate way to compare yearly energy consumption would be to consider the kWh/annum for each appliance.
